Post-Surgical Rehab

Post-surgical physical therapy helps you get strong before an operation and recover well after it, following your surgeon’s protocol. Elevate615 provides physical therapy after surgery in Franklin, Brentwood and Nashville: knee replacement rehab, hip replacement rehab, ACL surgery rehab, rotator cuff repair rehab and more. Every session is one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy.

Prehab before surgery: why getting stronger first helps

Prehab is physical therapy before surgery. A stronger, better-moving joint and body go into the operation ready to work, and recovery often starts from a better place. If surgery is planned, book a visit before the date. Our fitness assessment can also set a baseline for mobility, strength and endurance, and it includes pre-surgical fitness work.

Surgery is not always the first answer. Many joint problems begin with arthritis and joint pain, and we cover non-surgical care for each body part on its own page.

Following your surgeon’s protocol, and who you can see

Your surgeon sets the rules for what is safe and when. We carry them out.

Protocol-based exercise

Your exercise plan follows the protocol from your surgeon and progresses as you heal: motion first, then strength, then the activities you want back.

Keeping your surgeon in the loop

If something looks off or your progress stalls, we tell your surgeon and coordinate care with them.

Choosing your physical therapy clinic

Most patients can choose where they do their physical therapy, and you do not need a physician referral to start with us. Check how your plan works on our insurance page.

What recovery looks like, stage by stage

Every operation and every body is different, so your surgeon’s protocol sets the pace.

  1. The early stage: motion and swelling

We work on getting the joint moving again, easing swelling and stiffness, and walking safely as your surgeon allows.

  2. The rebuilding stage: strength and control

Strength and movement control come back with progressive exercise, with load added a step at a time.

  3. The return stage: your life and your sport

We get you ready for stairs, work, the gym, golf or running, and for training on your own afterward.

What we use to ease soreness and stiffness

Hands-on care

Manual therapy for stiff joints and tight muscles around the operated area.

Dry needling

Dry needling for muscle tightness and post-surgical stiffness, when your surgeon’s protocol allows.

Class IV laser

Class IV laser for soreness and stiffness after surgery, delivered inside your one-on-one session.

Surgery for a shoulder, knee, hip, back or breast

Rehab after shoulder surgery is covered with shoulder pain, knee replacement and ACL rehab with knee pain, hip replacement rehab with hip pain, and spinal fusion rehab with back pain. Athletes returning after an operation can also read sports injury rehab. Recovery after breast surgery has its own page: breast cancer recovery.

Tell your surgeon about these signs right away.

  • Pain, swelling or warmth in one calf or leg
  • Chest pain or sudden shortness of breath
  • Fever, or a wound that is red, hot or draining
